Thymer Weekly - 2026-01-25
A look at the latest Thymer App news from the past week.
Hi Everyone,
We are back with another episode of Thymer Weekly. Let’s see what is in store for us today.
I am going to start publishing these on Sunday to give a gap to my other posts.
Changelog
A lot of updates have been implemented in Thymer over the past week:
New features:
Search: `created_by` and `modified_by` operators
Simple text search now matches page title as well as other page properties (except for Choice and a few others)
Keyboard navigation and shortcuts now work in readonly panels
Point-in-time rewind mechanic in yoursite.thymer.com/diag.html
Sort choices in dropdowns now respect the linked collection’s sidebar sort order
Sidebar collapse/expand remembers last sidebar width
API:
Stricter input validation for plugin API calls, across the board
PluginRecord.createLineItem() now accepts segments and properties parameters
Bug fixes:
Fixed table view scrolling when another user focused a board card
Firefox bug where dropdown would get clipped by neighboring panel
When moving a page between collections frontmatter properties and the banner image now update
Dev Chat
Beta → Alpha
The main milestones the devs want to achieve before they release the Thymer Beta are:
Mobile is in a tolerable state
Desktop app
New signups can use Thymer for 10 minutes without running into any major bugs/glitches
JD also commented: We have a substantial beta signup list (30k people? more? haven’t checked in a while) and these users should have a good first impression. It’s OK if features are missing, but “beta” is more of a “finishing touches” phase, and during alpha it’s more acceptable if things are broken
We’re tentatively thinking about a beta launch around Feb 20, but I don’t know if we’ll be able to get all the important stuff done by then.
I think the above is great news. 2 months or so of closed alpha testing to sort out the critical bugs and get mobile-ready, and then let the masses in. More people need to be allowed into Thymer to enjoy this brilliant app.
Great Job.
Goal
The devs goal for Thymer is “to be approachable and welcoming to casual users, but have deep plugin options for powerusers”
I appreciate that the devs want to update and refine a number of things, but to me, Thymer is already what they want to achieve. I can open it and taking notes is clear enough.
If I want to do slightly more complex stuff, a bit of trial and error, and you can get there (I am sure things will be made simpler in the future anyway).
If I want to go deep and tweak things with plugins, I can.
Wim is Back Posting “Teasers”
Was very happy to read that Wim is planning on posting teasers/updates again on Twitter and has already done so, with the below:
I do like it when the devs post these clips online, now that we know Thymer is real!.
Pricing Talk
A bit more chat on the Thymer pricing:
“The plan is to keep Thymer free for personal (i.e. non-commercial) use, and to have a paid subscriptions for business use. I think it’s very likely we’ll be able to make this work, but we can’t know for sure until we actually get some business signups”
Tabs
A number of users would like to see tabs, in addition to the window panes that Thymer already offers. The devs have mentioned:
“We think that tabs although nice to have take too much work to prio right now, and we think we better focus on mobile/tablet and regular navigation polish, and then we can revisit the tab issue at a later point”
Landing Page / Docs
There was a bit of chat on the Thymer landing page and a potential suggestion this may be tweaked in the near future to make it more accessible.
“…the Thymer landing page is still pretty bare-bones but we plan on adding more content there over time. Ideally we'd also write all the docs in Thymer itself of course, so we could maybe even include it in the app,”
On the landing page, I am sure that as the devs obtain feedback and see how people are using Thymer, the messaging will change accordingly. This is a good thing about the devs, not set in their ways and willing to listen to suggestions if it can make everyone’s life easier.
I like the idea of having all the docs in Thymer.
Community Chat
Plugins/Themes Showcase
Early users have already created several Thymer plugins and themes and I am sure there are a lot more that are going to be developed.
Whilst there is a showcase channel in Discord, not everyone has access, so I created an Awesome Thymer repo so you can see what others have created/add your own Thymer creation.

Stress Testing Thymer
There were a couple of comments on Thymer’s speed in Discord, so I thought to do a bit of testing by generating 6 collections of 1000 pages each. Each page has about 500 to 1500 words.
Thymer is still going very strong with no visible lag compared to a fresh workspace. I also did the same, but with several plugins enabled. Same result, no visible lag. Not worried at all about the future.
It was in just plain text for now, another day I will try to add links to the pages, and then images, codeblocks, and properties, etc.
Not sure why some users are having speed issues, but as it could be a significant number of things/specific issue to the user, it might be tricky to find. The devs are focusing on getting the Beta released, but I am sure they will revisit this when they have time.
Outlining
There was some chat about the beauty of combining long-form/prose writing with a very good outline. The devs do not want to stop there, though, and commented:
“still much we can do to improve the editor so it gets better at outlining without compromising long form”
Really excited for the future.
And on this note, Kavia created a post which I thought was a good read (love how it has been laid out and presented). How cool that we can do both in Thymer without any hassle. I did a little exploration into outliners vs paragraphs and some in-depth research with Gemini, and got it to make a little website about outliners vs written prose as a form of note-taking efficiency https://gemini.google.com/share/15f6146f40c9
Root Tree
The devs are still working on ways to create/implement a new type of view that would expose the entire internal tree/outline, or at least, the outline from the collections, with a collection as the root node and all its pages/records as its descendants.
There are a few blockers before they can acheive this though, but it is planned.
when zooming in the first item isn’t shown
zooming in on blocks doesn’t work
page links and such don’t show up in search yet (and we need the logic to display page titles in order to show records in a collection when zoomed out)
collapse/expand related bugs
Plugins / Themes
A preview of some of the Plugins and Themes that have been created/updated. Just remember, it may be wise to play around with some of these in a test/play workspace before bringing them into your main one. Awesome Thymer
Indent Rainbow - Enhanced hierarchy visualisation with rainbow-colored indent guides
Thymer Importer - Import notes from other note apps. Huge updates.
Thank you very much for reading and being a part of Thymer Weekly. This is much appreciated. See you next week.

I'm looking forward to beta Thymer, but damn, I hate paid subscriptions for note-taking apps. I want my note-taking app to be with me forever, without limits for personal and business use, even if I one day become homeless and unable even to afford food.
So, it would be perfect for self-hosted Thymer to have a one-time payment, or something like a one-time payment + 1 year of free updates, so after a year, I could choose to continue using Thymer as it is, or pay a little and get fresh updates.
